A Menhir is a monolithic stone; they can stand alone or in circular groups, as seen at Stonehenge. No one is quite sure what their purpose is, but many have been found all around the world. Modern historians hypothesize that they act as boundary markers, enormous grave stones, calendars or even as the sites of Druidic sacrifices. The word itself is an amalgamation of two Breton words: men meaning stone, and hir meaning long.
